The Chinese year 4712 begins today.

According to infoplease.com:

Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality.

This is the year of the horse.

What does it mean if you were born in the year of the horse?

The website travelchinaguide.com lists past years of the horse and offers this insight:

The spirit of the horse is recognized to be the Chinese people's ethos – making unremitting efforts to improve themselves. It is energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able.

Of course, in addition to being clever as well as kind to others, you also have a dark side.

You're impatient and hot-blooded and rarely listen to anyone's advice.

That side's known as the horse's ass. :-D
