We still don’t know when we’ll hear him play guitar again, but Eddie Van Halen is putting at least one of his axes to good use right now: he’s offering it up for auction, with the proceeds going to benefit the Drop in the Bucket charity — and the winner walking away with a true one-of-a-kind instrument.

The guitar in question is a 1999 Wolfgang Translucent Cherry Sunburst 5A Flametop, autographed by EVH himself and complete with a certificate of authenticity. One of the first Wolfgangs ever produced, it’s been owned by Eddie since it was made.

Bidding on the auction, which runs through Jan. 19, currently stands at just over $4,000 — certainly not an insignificant chunk of change, but well worth it for the chance to own a piece of rock ‘n’ roll history. Of course, with so much time left on the clock, the top bid is bound to end up soaring well beyond four grand; still, for the right bidder, this will be an irresistible opportunity.

And at the end of the day, the proceeds will help Drop in the Bucket fulfill their goal of building “cost-effective wells and innovative sanitation systems at large rural schools in sub-Saharan Africa.” Way to go, Eddie! Now how about you finish that new album we’ve been waiting so long to hear?
