A proposal to raise fines for slow drivers in the left lane in New Jersey, if passed, could give more teeth to an already tough "keep right" law in our state.

An online survey by the Asbury Park Press says the top pet peeve over other bad driving behaviors is drivers who won't yield to faster cars in the left lane.

I admit this pisses me off, too.

But I don't use rude tactics to get them to move over when I want to pass them, like tailgating.

I really don't.

(O.K., I admit it's tempting and I have to talk myself down. Visions of owning a tank appear in my head).

I just don't understand why some drivers insist on staying in the left lane when there's room to move to the right and let faster motorists pass them.

Plus, it's against the law not to move over for faster traffic in the left lane.

Apparently, the "Pass Left, Ride Right" idea eludes them.

By the way, June is "Lane Courtesy Month", as designated by the National Motorists Association driving rights group.

So I guess that tank has to wait.

What do you think about the idea of raising fines for slowpokes in the left lane?  Do you think this will have any impact at all?
