TRENTON — Police around New Jersey will be looking for drivers behind the wheel and under the influence.

State Police said they will set up a sobriety checkpoint on Saturday in the area of Belmar-Neptune Township at an unspecified time. "Our advice to you is that if you plan on drinking, have a designated driver, arrange for transportation, or stay where you are," they wrote on their Facebook page .

Several local police agencies have holiday weekend checkpoints planned, including:

  • Cherry Hill -  Friday "late in the evening" at an undisclosed location
  • Deal - Ocean Ave - Friday 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
  • Gloucester Township - Friday 10 pm. -2 a.m. (undisclosed location)

The U.S. Supreme Court in 1990 ruled that “the interest in reducing alcohol-impaired driving was sufficient to justify the brief intrusion of a sobriety checkpoint. If conducted properly, sobriety checkpoints do not constitute illegal search and seizure in most states,” the state Attorney General’s website notes.

State Police asked drivers to be on the lookout for impaired and distracted  drivers as well and report it by dialing #77 from a mobile phone.

"Be ready to give a description of the vehicle and occupants, a location and direction, and a license plate if possible," police said.

Meanwhile, 375 departments statewide continue the Click it or Ticket campaign continues over the long holiday weekend in search of drivers not wearing seatbelts. The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $46 with no insurance points.
