A 24-year-old Jersey City man was pronounced dead at Jersey Shore University Medical Center at 6:48 p.m. on Tuesday, Bradley Beach Police Chief Leonard Guida confirmed on Tuesday evening.

The man had been pulled from the ocean off Bradley Beach’s Brinley Avenue by rescue crews after being submerged for some time.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Two juveniles from Newark, who were with the deceased, were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

This is a breaking news update of a previous story, which appears below in its entirety.

A distressed swimmer was pulled from the ocean off Bradley Beach’s Brinley Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Bradley Beach Police Chief Leonard Guida reported that the person had been submerged for a time and as of 7 p.m. has been transported by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Four other swimmers were also rescued. Three were transported from the scene by stretcher. The fourth was walking under his own power, but breathing through a respirator.

Guida confirmed that all five were in the same party. No lifeguards were on duty.

First response units from Bradley Beach, Ocean Grove, Avon-by-the-Sea and Neptune Township were on the scene.

The water temperature Tuesday was 59 degrees and a hard south wind created rough sea conditions.

This incident comes on the heels of a missing swimmer incident in Long Branch. It’s been almost a year to the date since 15-year-old Neptune resident Naisere Nelson went missing in the surf off the same beach and was found dead several days later in the Shark River.
