When the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers take to the ice, there's usually fireworks. It just doesn't always happen this quickly.At :03 on the game clock, before the opening face-off could be decided, three separate fist fights broke out on the ice during Monday night's match between the two local teams at Madison Square Garden.

Last night's brawl was undoubtedly a response to a similar incident which happened the last time the teams met in December, where it only took until :02 for fists to fly.

Fighting plays a complicated role in professional hockey. On one hand it is brutally violent and dangerous, though on the other hand, many feel the chance of retribution prevents potential cheap shots and illegal contact.
