In a surprising move, Dave Letterman announced his retirement during the taping of Thursday night’s show.

Letterman recently signed a 2-year contract having him host the show until the end of 2015.

Right before the taping of Thursday Night’s show, Letterman called Les Moonves, owner of CBS, to let him know of his plans to retire. Letterman said to Moonves, “Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring.’”

No word at this point on Dave’s replacement
