David Bowie and Bon Jovi Battling it Out for No. 1

David Bowie and Bon Jovi are currently embroiled in a huge fight — but it’s nothing personal. In a scene that seems ripped from the mid-’80s, the two classic rock heavyweights are duking it out for the No. 1 position in next week’s Billboard 200 chart.

According to Billboard, industry sources are predicting that Bowie’s new album ‘The Next Day‘ — released on Tuesday (March 12) — will sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 90,000 units in its opening week, putting it on track to capture the top spot. It’s Bowie’s first effort in ten years, since ‘Reality’ in 2003, and even if it doesn’t hit No. 1, it’s on track to become his Top 10 album since ‘Let’s Dance’ all the way back in 1984. If the album does hit the top spot, it will (surprisingly) be the first No. 1 album of the chameleon-like performer’s long career.

Bon Jovi’s new album ‘What About Now‘ also bowed Tuesday, and Billboard reports it is also on its way to moving around 90,000 units, putting it in a dead heat with Bowie’s new disc. If it edges out Bowie’s, it will be the Jersey-based rock/AC/country/pop group’s fifth career chart-topper. The group’s past No. 1 albums include ‘Slippery When Wet’ in 1986, ‘New Jersey’ in 1988, ‘Lost Highway’ in 2007, and ‘The Circle’ in 2009.
