Steven Anako, 44 was arrested on Saturday and charged with knowingly leaving a motor vehicle accident with serious bodily injury, tampering with physical evidence, and hindering apprehension. He posted $50,000 bail and was released pending his next court appearance.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Brick Police used video surveillance of the area and EZ Pass records to determine several possible vehicles that may have struck James Joseph Cox as he crossed Lanes Mill Road in front of Parkway Pizza late Monday afternoon. Anako's car was determined to be the most likely vehicle involved.

When officers went to Anako's Serpentine Drive home, the car in question was not there but he was seen in another car as a passenger. He agreed to be questioned at Brick Police headquarters where he was charged. Police also seized his vehicle at a body shop in north Jersey where Anako was having having repairs made to the vehicle.

Cox remains hospitalized in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Brick.
