“Boss of the Sauce 2008” Official Rules WCHR-FM – Monmouth/Ocean County, NJ
1. “Boss of the Sauce” will take place on Monday, April 14, 2008 at Woodlake Country Club, 25 New Hampshire Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701 beginning at 5pm (EST).
2. Any restaurant found in violation of any of the below rules will be immediately disqualified from the judging and will not be eligible to win. No “warnings” will be issued. Any restaurant that is disqualified may still sample their products, etc. They will just not be eligible to win. The decision of the judges is final.
- Competition is based on red based tomato sauce submissions. Red based tomato sauces (marinara, meat, vegetable, Bolognese, etc.) will be permitted and eligible to participate and win. No cream-based sauce (béchamel, etc.), wine-based sauce (Marsala, etc.), cheese sauce or any other non-red based tomato sauces will not be eligible to participate and win. Red-based tomato sauces that contain wine as an ingredient will be permitted. The decision of the judges will be final. Sauces must be “homemade”. Serving cups and utensils will be provided. Bread and water will also be provided to our guests.
- In order to control the crowd and to maintain an ‘even playing field’, restaurants are allowed a total of four (4) staff members to work the event within their designated sampling booth space. These four (4) staff members are not able to be switched out or transferred. Each designated staff member will receive a credential (colored bracelet or similar) upon arrival. These credentials cannot be switched with another person. Other restaurant staffers are welcome to attend they event, but they must pay the $5 entry fee in order to vote and are not allowed within the designated sampling booth space.
- Restaurants are permitted to distribute promotional items (buttons, key chains, menus, etc.) from within their designated sampling area only. No items are to be distributed from anywhere at Woodlake Country Club (including lobby and parking lot) outside their designated sampling area. Restaurants may offer an enter to win prize at their designated sampling area. This enter to win must be open and available to all attendees, and not just people that vote for a specific restaurant.
- Restaurants are not permitted to distribute gift certificates and/or other type gifts in exchange for votes. Discount coupons as a general hand out within the designated sampling area as outlined above are permitted.
- Competing restaurants do not reserve the right to alter or change the location of their table in the competition. Competing restaurants will be placed accordingly in alphabetical order.
- Upon load-in on the event date, each restaurant will be asked to sign a release form indicating that they have read and understand all the rules. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the competition. Disqualified restaurants may still participate in the event and sample their products, but will not be eligible to win.
- For the Judges Choice blind taste test: The judging will be done at Woodlake Country Club, but away from the main event room. Judging will take place within a one (1) hour period. This judging period is at the sole direction of WCHR-FM. A WCHR-FM staffer will collect sauce samples (enough to fill the container) in a small covered tin ‘take out’ type container. Samples will be provided to the judges following collection. Samples will not be re-heated prior to judging. Each restaurant will be assigned a number (in no particular order) on the event ledger. This ledger is not ‘public knowledge’. No one, including the judges, will have access to this ledger, except for one (1) WCHR-FM staffer. Each sample container will have a concurrent number on the bottom of the container. At the conclusion of the blind taste test, the judges will indicate which numbered container they are selecting. This will be compared to the event ledger in order to name a winner. The restaurant that received a majority vote will be named winner. In the event of a tie, WCHR-FM staffers will participate in the blind taste test in order to name a winner. The WCHR-FM staffer that has access to the event ledger as listed above WILL NOT participate in the blind taste test judging in the event of a tie. The Judges Choice will be announced prior to the People’s Choice. The blind taste test judging panel will not be announced prior to the event.
- For the People’s Choice: This event is open to the public. Those who wish to participate in voting (“participants”) will pay a $5 cash donation to the Foodbank of Monmouth & Ocean County and receive three (3) Boss of the Sauce voting chips. There will also be a limited number of “VIP” passes available for $10. VIP’s will also receive three (3) Boss of the Sauce voting chips. Participants may only pay once and receive a maximum of three (3) voting chips. Participants must be 18 years old or older to vote. All ages are welcome to attend the event. Participants then go around the room and taste sauces from the competing restaurants. Participants will place chips in the sealed contest bins provided at each competing restaurant’s table. There is no limit to the amount of chips one participant can place in an individual competitors voting bin (up to 3 voting chips total.) All sealed voting bins will have a pre-determined number affixed to the bottom of the voting bin. All competing restaurants will be assigned a number at the bottom of the voting bin (same number as listed for Judge’s Choice). At 7:30pm voting will be closed. By 7:45pm all sealed contestant bins will be collected and the voting chips contained in each voting bin will be counted. Any participating restaurant will be disqualified if their voting bin is not sealed or has been tampered in any way. The decision of the judges is final. The number at the bottom of the voting bin will be matched with the official WCHR-FM event ledger to the respective competing restaurant. The restaurant that has the most chips wins the “Boss of the Sauce 2008 People’s Choice Award”. There will be an additional “Boss of The Sauce 2008 Judges Choice Award” also awarded. In the event of a tie, WCHR-FM staffers will determine the People’s Choice winner.
