On this day in rock history, the Rolling Stones began their Steel Wheels tour at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The album of the same name, which had been released a few days earlier, put an end -- temporarily -- to years of public feuding between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

In other Rolling Stones news, they released Goats Head Soup in 1972. Despite having a No. 1 hit with "Angie" and highlights in "‘Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" and "Winter," the album felt like a comedown after the groundbreaking run they had been on for the previous four years.

The Beach Boys put out Sunflower in 1970. The record, their first for Reprise after spending the '60s on Capitol, didn't sell well, peaking at No. 151 on the Billboard album chart. But it remains a cult favorite as is considered one of their best of the post-Pet Sounds era thanks to the singles "Add Some Music to Your Life" and the Smiley Smile outtake, "Cool, Cool Water."

And we also wish a happy birthday to Van Morrison. The singer responsible for classic albums like Moondance, Astral Weeks and Tupelo Honey was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Aug. 31, 1945.
