Cell Phones For Soldiers - Throughout the month of January MODC (Monmouth-Ocean Development Council) will be collecting unused cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program  at all of their events and committee meetings. The phones will be shipped to the recycling center byNetCetra, LLC with the proceeds of the exchange used to purchase calling cards that will be sent to our troops abroad.  Chargers, batteries and other accessories are not required with the phones, but will gladly be accepted with your donation.  For more information visit modc.com  or call 732.751.8696.

Essay Contest - Dr. Ron Rotem, a dentist at the Center for Exceptional Cosmetic and Adult Dentistry, Toms River, is sponsoring a scholarship essay contest for high school seniors in Monmouth and Ocean counties. The winner will receive $1000.00.  The first runner up will receive $500.00; and Dr. Rotem will award $100.00 to the next five runners up. Entrants need to write a letter addressed to President-elect Obama, suggesting what he should do about education in our country. Eligible public school or private school high school seniors should send all letters, postmarked by January 30, 2009, to Dr. Ron Rotem, 355 Lakehurst Road, Toms River, N.J., 08755. Ocean County Library Film Festival
The Ocean County Library is accepting submissions for its third annual film festival to be held at the Toms River branch, 101 Washington Street, Friday March 27 and Saturday March 28. There are two divisions in the film festival: one for entrants attending high school, the other for adults. Categories include best short film, best documentary, best animation, best music video, best commercial and best news piece. The deadline for submissions is March 2, 2009. Films must be submitted on a DVD with a completed festival entry form. Rock'n Music Idol 2008-2009 - The deadline to enter Rock'n Music Idol 2008-2009 has been extended from October 17th, 2008 to February 20. , 2009 due to the overwhelming response this season. Rock'n Music Idol is a state-wide search for New Jersey's most impressive musicians ages 7-17 in the categories of guitar, bass, drums, keys/piano, vocals, and vocals/instrument. The competition follows an audition process during which contestants are judged by a panel of professional musicians based on style, technique, and originality. The winners of Rock'n Music Idol receive a unique grand prize that includes professional recording studio time to write and record an original song, the opportunity to perform at the prestigious Stone Pony, and a professional photo shoot with legendary photographer Mark Weiss. American Red Cross Jersey Coast ChapterThe American Red Cross Jersey Coast Chapter has issued a blood supply alert for New Jersey putting them at risk of not being able to provide enough blood of certain types needed to support patient needs.  All blood types are needed but there there is a critical need for Type O. Concert For Darfur
Spring Lake resident Drew D'Amico, 18, and Bradley Beach resident Tory Mulligan, 17, hold a charity concert to raise money to help those suffering from the genocide being carried out in the Darfur region of Sudan at the Algonquin Arts Theater, located at 173 Main St at 7PM. The concert will feature performances by Drew's band, Mercer Avenue, and Nicole Atkins and the Sea, an act out of Neptune City that recently signed with Columbia Records. Spaghetti Dinner
The Lacey Township Coed Cheerleaders host a Spaghetti dinner at the Lanoka Harbor Firehouse from 5PM-8PM to help raise funds for their trip to the national competition In Orlando. The team is currently selling T-shirts to help cut the cost of their trip; they are asking businesses for a $100 sponsorship to have that businesses name placed on the back of their T-shirt. These shirts will be worn by the girls and cheer parents while in Florida. Also, the event will be televised on ESPN.

The Ocean County YMCA presents the 25th annual Toms River Art & Decoy Festival at Central Regional High School in Bayville on Saturday, January 17 & Sunday, January 18 from 10AM-4PM each day. Over 100 exhibitors will display their
Wildfowl Carvings, Decoys, Songbirds, Antique Decoys, Carving Suppliers, Fish Carvings and Sculptures, Books, Wildlife Artwork, Prints and Photography, Life-size and Miniature Artwork, Maritime Artwork, Original Watercolors, Museum and Environmental Exhibits. Plus, a diverse selection of carvers and artists will be demonstrating their techniques.  Proceeds benefit the Ocean County YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign which allows struggling families and those in crisis to participate in its health and wellness programs. Tour Of Glory
The High Performance Volleyball Academy (HPVBA) hosts the Tour of Glory Tournament at HPVBA’s facility located at 1245 Airport Rd in Lakewood.  The Tour of Glory is a multi day volleyball competition for children and their parents. The twenty two (22) courts located at the facility will support many teams in volleyball competition over a three day period. It will also serve as a fund rising for our national programs, an opportunity to honor the players that once were part of a club like ours and an inspirational moment for many of the younger players. There will also be skills clinics with athletes and coaches who have taken the US to the Olympic Medal stand not only during the recent Summer Olympics in Beijing, but also in previous Olympic Games and World Cups.  Personalities who are expected include Beijing’s Gold medalist and the USA Men’s Volleyball Coach Hugh McCutcheon, World Champions and Olympic medalists Kevin Barnet, Lindsay Berg, Nicole Davis, Stacy Sykora. Donor Drive
DKMS, the largest marrow donor center in the world, is teaming up with the Culmone family and their friends to organize a  bone marrow donor drive at the Marlboro Recreation Center from 11AM-4PM. Tom Culmone has been battling Leukemia for the past 3 years.  After a brief remission following chemotherapy treatments, Tom’s Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia has relapsed very aggressively.  His only chance of survival is a stem cell transplant. Flyin' High Over The Jersey Shore


Each year, there are over 2 million poison exposures reported to Poison Control Centers across the US.  The New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES) has been the state’s regional drug and poison information system for the past 25 years.  NJPIES is a non-profit organization that offers poison emergency and drug information services to NJ residents via its hotline (1-800-222-1222).  Trained health professionals (doctor, nurse, or pharmacist) are available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week to assist callers with poison emergencies, poison prevention information, drug information, food poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning, treatment advice following bites/stings, medication side effects and interactions, etc.  All calls are free and confidential.  Services are available for the hearing impaired (973-926-8008) and for those who speak languages other than English.

Angel Food partners with churches and community organizations throughout the country to help distribute food. You can order quality food (no seconds or expired products) that retail for $55-$80 at local food stores for only $30.  Each basic unit ($30) of food contains enough food to feed a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 school aged children) for about one week or a single person for a month.  There is no limit to the number of basic units you can buy. This food is for everyone who wants to save money on their grocery bill. There are no applications or income restrictions. DVDs 4 Vets
DVDs4Vets is a Non-Profit Charity that arranges for the collection and donation of new and used DVDs for the benefit of veterans, many who are unable to obtain these on their own. Ocean County Hunger Relief is collecting children's clothes, coats, & shoes (sizes infant to teen), book bags, and lunch boxes for needy children in Ocean County.  There is a desperate need because the organization almost never has these items. Especially needed are baby items such as diapers, wipes, shampoo, baby wash, etc. The children receiving the donations are either very poor or homeless.
