Alice Cooper Almost Done With New Covers Album

The “Hollywood vampires” of the early-to-mid-’70s are providing the inspiration for an upcoming release by a man who’s spent a career exploring the dark and ghoulish. In a new interview, Alice Cooper gives a few details about the covers album he’s currently recording.

Cooper told Billboard that he’s “three-quarters of the way through” the disc, which will celebrate the musicians who pretty much drank Los Angeles dry as Cooper’s star was rising. This includes John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Harry Nilsson.

Although he declined to give the entire track listing, he mentioned four songs that he and his band have been performing on their current tour – ‘Break on Through’ by the Doors, ‘Revolution’ by the Beatles, ‘Foxey Lady’ by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Who‘s ‘My Generation’ – as being part of the new record. While those songs fall outside the timeframe he references, he clarified his position.

“We’re really happy, all of us, everyone involved in the covers because it’s pretty much what we wanted to do,” he said. “We specified a certain time period and said, ‘Let’s stay within that. Let’s not move it around too much.’ We don’t want to be doing cover songs from the 80s and 90s when the Hollywood vampires kind of thing was more ’73, ’74, ’75.”

Cooper says that he and his band will probably return to the studio in September to finish the project the as-yet unnamed album, with the hopes of having it out by the early spring of 2014. Bob Ezrin, who manned the boards for Cooper’s seminal works, is producing.
