Watches and warnings from today's snow have been canceled as the storm moves away.

The thick, wet snow came in fast and heavy already whitening roads and causing several minor accidents but not nearly as much snow that was forecast fell.

LATEST:

3:15 p.m. - All warnings, warches and advisories have been canceled by the National Weather Service. Jefferson Park in Middlesex County got the most snow with 4 inches. 2-3 inches fell around the state according to measurements from the NWS.

Delays are reduced to 90 minutes at Newark, 1 hour, 15 minutes at JFK and around an hour at LaGuardia and Philadelphia.

Crews continue to clean up an overturned dump truck that was treating the roads at #54.

10:37 a.m. - Airport delays remain the same at Newark ( 5 hours, 30 minutes) while growing at JFK (2 hours), Philadelphia (4 hours, 30 min) and LaGuardia (5 hours). 45 minute delays also continue for NJ Transit on the North Jersey Coast Line

10:31 a.m. - As the snow picks up in intensity there could be "thundersnow." NY NJ PA Weather's Steven DiMartino explains to Newsworks that "you have a highly unstable atmosphere, much colder temperatures aloft. That leads to rapidly rising air, very heavy snowfall as a result, and so you end up what what's called connective snowfall."

9:40 a.m. - Outerbridge Crossing eastbound CLOSED due to an accident involving a truck and two cars on the Staten Island side.There are a number of minor accidents on many roads including the New Jersey Turnpike in the northbound outer lanes at #11 (Garden State Parkway), Route 22 in Watchung and Route 38.

8:30 a.m. - Speed reduced to 45 MPH on the entire length of the Garden State Parkway and between #1 (Delaware Memorial Bridge) and #8A (Jamesburg) on the New Jersey Turnpike

8:26 a.m. 5 1/2 hour delays at Newark; 1 hour, 10 minutes at Philadelphia and almost an hour at LaGuardia according to FlightAware.com

8:20 a.m. - The Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line have 45 minute delays between Newark and New York Penn Station due to single tracking over the Portal Bridge.

8:15 a.m. - News 12 New Jersey reports that NJ DOT has 1,250 pieces of equipment ready to hit the roads.

7:55 a.m. - NJ Transit is now cross honoring tickets across its entire system on trains, buses and light rail.


Snow accumulation will be heaviest in south Jersey with 4-6 inches accumulation in Camden, Mercer, Burlington, Gloucester and Salem counties where a Winter Weather Warning in in place until 5 p.m. A Winter Storm Advisory has been issued for the rest of the state for 2-4 inches of snow. 1-2 inches is expected for coastal areas of Atlantic and Cape May Counties.

Meteorologist Alan Kasper expects rain to mix in with the snow in south Jersey.

 

New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Jim Simpsons says he and his crews are ready to treat the roads they are responsible for. They have been pre-treated with a brine mixture. "It's basically a calcium water that binds onto the roadway, that allow you to buy some time so that when you start to get the snow you don't get the ice," he said, "it keeps everything in a liquid form."

No changeover to sleet or snow is expected and winds will not be an issue.
